Background

MTC Studio Designs was created through a passion for furniture design and real bench made quality craftsmanship. We have focused on developing our own original designs that show a transitional and modern feel, along with our own flare and interpretation to some classical designs.

Founded in 2010, MTC Studio Designs brings to the design trade a focus on service, quality and true craftsmanship made quality furniture at a good value. Founder Michael Coates was the former COO of Woodland Furniture who helped assist ownership in developing Woodland from the nine-man operation, when he started, to what they have become. During his time at Woodland he facilitated an effort to create best practices in manufacturing by deploying “Lean Manufacturing techniques” that lead to Woodland winning the national manufacturing “Shingo Prize” award in 2002. Michael now brings that experience combined with new ideas to MTC Studio Designs in an effort to create a “to the trade” furniture manufacturer that can provide unsurpassed quality and service at a good value.

Michael fell in love with furniture as a teenager as he had many opportunities to spend time in local antique shops. He later began apprenticing for a “to the trade” custom woodworking shop. During his time apprenticing, he began gravitating to the artistic side of finishing and became a master finisher. Michael started at Woodland as the Finishing Manager and created many of the finishes Woodland uses today. During his years at Woodland, he became responsible for the facilitation of new product and finish development as he ran the operations of the company. During that time, he fell in love with furniture design and ideas; he now has the opportunity to bring those ideas to fruition for you.
